You must meet certain criteria to take online GED classes.

The General Education Development (GED) -- diploma or certificate -- is awarded to individuals who successfully achieve their state's minimum passing scores on the GED exam. Each test consists of multiple-choice questions in language arts, math, social studies and science. Students must also complete the written portion of the exam. Attending and completing GED preparation classes can be a key component to performing well on this examination. Columbus, Mississippi residents have the opportunity to complete the GED program online. To enroll in the program, students must meet eligibility requirements and obtain a certain score on the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) exam.

      Verify your eligibility to pursue the GED program. You must be at least 17 years old and not required to attend school under the Mississippi compulsory attendance law. A driver's license, birth certificate or Mississippi state-ID card can be used to provide proof of age. You must also be a Mississippi resident and not presently enrolled in any public, private or homeschool program.

      Obtain the required documents. 17 year old applicants must provide withdrawal verification documentation from their previous school and submit any other academic records upon request.

      Go to the Mississippi GED Online application agreement Web page and read through the online applicant requirements. To access the application, scroll to the bottom of the screen and click the "Application" tab. After submitting your application, you must wait to be contacted by a local adult education center to complete the TABE exam.

      Achieve minimum scores on the exam. In addition to writing an essay and signing a release of information document, you must obtain the minimum of an 8th grade reading level to be eligible for online GED course instruction. If you're eligible, a TABE test administrator will send your scores to the online program. If you score below the 8th grade reading level, you must register for or continue on-site GED classes at the Greater Columbus Learning Center (GCLC).

      Register for classes at the GCLC. Bring your picture ID and Social Security card to the center. You will be required to complete all paperwork, obtain a class schedule for GED enrollment and complete an evaluation to assess your GED class needs. At the completion of the online or classroom GED program, you will be required to take the GED exam at the GCLC or other designated testing facility.

  • The online and traditional GED programs are offered for free as of May 2011.

  • You can continue the GED program with the next class session if you haven't reached your GED goals by the end of the program at the GCLC.

  • As of May 2011, the GED examination fee is $40 for the initial test and $12 per exam for retesting.
