How to Spark a Fire
If you ever become stranded in the woods and you need to spark a fire to boil water, cook food, or provide warmth for yourself, you will need to know the correct procedure for successfully completing this task. You need to have access to the necessary equipment for sparking and building a fire which will require some basic preparation beforehand. Have a nest of oakum tinder and kindling prepared with extra fuel for the fire if it is available.
Things You'll Need
- Kindling
- Oakum tinder
- Fuel
- Flint
- High carbon C-Steel or steel knife
- Char cloth

Hold a piece of char cloth down on top of a piece of flint with your thumb. Slide the char cloth back so two inches of the flint's edge is visible.

Strike a piece of steel against the flint at a 30 degree angle repeatedly until the char cloth begins to glow.

Place your char cloth into a nest of tinder and fold it over.

Blow on the nest until you see a flame.
