How to Install the Electrical Heat Element in an Electric Oven

Electric ovens are used at various temperatures for the baking and broiling of foods. The heat in electric ovens is developed by a ceramic-coated wiring system referred to as an element. When the element becomes faulty and inoperative, it must be replaced with a new one. Once the old element has been removed from the oven, the new one can be installed with a minimal amount of tools and basic mechanical and electrical know-how. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Check the circuit breaker at the main electrical panel to ensure that the power to the oven circuit is off. The breaker must be tagged or marked to alert others of the work being done.

    • 2

Check the controls on the oven to ensure that they are in the off position. Unplug the oven cord from its receptacle as well for added safety.

    • 3

Connect the two electrical power supply wires to each of the two terminals on the oven element. If the wires have plug connectors, be sure the plugs are fully seated and fit securely on the terminals. If the connectors use terminal screws, tighten the screws clockwise with the appropriate screwdriver.

Insert the element into the terminal cavity of the oven. Place the outer sections of the element into the spring clips that hold it in position.

    • 5

Align the holes of the element mounting flange with the holes on either side of the cavity hole. Insert the flange retaining screws into the holes and tighten clockwise with a screwdriver to secure the element.

Plug the oven cord into its receptacle and restore power at the main panel. Remove all tags and markings from the circuit breaker.
