How to Make Crochet Socks

Crochet socks in your favorite color and fiber.

Homemade socks have long been considered the domain of the knitter, but crocheters can whip up handmade socks as easily as a knitter, designed specifically to fit the left or right foot. Thicker yarn and larger needles, such as the ones called for in this pattern, create "cabin" style slipper socks, but you can increase the number of stitches to use fingering weight yarn and smaller needles for a more classic weight of sock. Choose natural fiber yarns for socks that allow feet to breathe.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Chain 5, then single crochet in second stitch from needle. Crochet across, chain 1, then crochet across again.

    • 2

Crochet in a round, around the 5 stitch row, increasing two stitches at the beginning and end of each row. This begins to form the toe of the sock. Continue until you have an oval approximately the same width as your foot and work one round without increasing.

    • 3

Continue working in the round, single crocheting into each stitch, until the sock is approximately 8 inches long. You can make this portion longer for a bigger foot or shorter for smaller feet.

    • 4

Crochet half the stitches, then chain the rest of the stitches. Rejoin at the end of the row. This hole is the heel which you will fill in later.

    • 5

Continue knitting in single crochet in the round to form the ankle of the sock. Make the ankle as long as you would like. Knot the last stitch, weave in end, and clip excess yarn.

    • 6

Return to the hole for the heel. Single crochet around the hole, into each stitch and the chain.

    • 7

Continue in rounds, decreasing two stitches at the end and beginning of each row. Continue until you have five stitches left. Knot the stitch, then clip the yarn.

    • 8

Sew the small heel hole together using the yarn end, then weave in and clip excess.

    • 9

Repeat Steps 1 through 8 for the second sock.
