Stars and candles can be easily arranged for different types of centerpieces.

Different people have different ideas about what might bring them luck, whether it's a rubbing stone, finding a four-leaf clover or the particular arrangement of planets in an astrology chart at a given time. How you choose to create a lucky-star-themed centerpiece depends on your particular belief about what will bring you luck. In the world of origami, crafting "lucky stars" is thought to bring happy outcomes, so you can make your own and place them in different containers. You can also make centerpieces using various star-shaped materials and candles to light up your table any time of the year.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit a craft supply shop and choose some items you would like to work with, such as a square glass vase, a wicker basket, raffia and a selection of star ornaments. Keep your star theme in mind and look for unusual star-shaped items. You can find novel items at thrift shops and garage or yard sales if you start well before you plan to make your centerpiece.

Assemble everything at a work space, which can be the table the centerpiece will actually go on. Choose your central item -- a glass platter, bowl or vase or a cardboard box you can decorate by wrapping with fabric. Design the outside of the central item before filling. You can leave it plain, or glue on fabric, paper or lace. Creating glitter stars works as well. Let the glue dry.

Fill the central bowl with glass stones, raffia, stuffing or live greenery. If you use greenery and flowers, add enough water to cover the stems. If you are using a basket, silk leaves or paper strips can also be used for filling. Stuff the basket to within an inch or two of the top.

Add the various star symbols. Use several tall slender stars on metal or wire posts and arrange around the greenery or stuffing. Consider filling the entire bowl or platter with folded origami stars. You can also mix and match stars from glass ornaments with folded paper ones. Place star-shaped candles on two sides or around the bowl and add greenery for additional visual appeal.

Tips & Warnings

  • Shop for craft items when there's a good sale at your local shop.

  • If you want to use only origami stars, you can fill a large bowl with as many as you can fold.

  • Don't light candles or leave unattended candles burning where they can ignite fabric, greenery or other items.
