After you complete the application for your disability claim, the waiting process begins. Some applications are approved in as little as 30 days, but most will take months. The average amount of time an application takes to be approved is typically between three and four months. Waiting can be frustrating for people who are in dire need of this income. If you want to check on the status of your application during this waiting period, you are able to do so online via the Social Security website.
Go to the official Social Security Administration website (see Resources).
Click on the "Disability" tab. This tab is the third one from the left at the top of the page.
Click on the "Check Application Status" button. This button is located under the section titled "Apply for Disability Benefits," and it's the second of the three blue buttons.
Enter your Social Security number in the designated box.
Enter your confirmation number in the designated box. This is the number you received as confirmation when you submitted your application.
Click on the "Next" button to view your disability application status. This button is located in the bottom right corner of the page. Your claim won't be updated into this system until five days after you initially filed your application so these services won't be available to you until after this period. Since application processing times typically take many months, it's generally recommended that you periodically check your application status every 45 to 60 days.
