How to Prepare for a TJ Test
The renowned Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJHSST) in Alexandria, Va., offers a challenging opportunity for students. With a curriculum focusing on biological, physical, mathematical, technological and computer sciences, TJHSST provides an environment where high academic achievers with a passion for science and technology can thrive. However, the admissions process is competitive. Among the criteria is the ability to pass the Thomas Jefferson Admissions Test, commonly referred to as the TJ Test. It is given to prospective students during December of their eighth-grade year. Fortunately, there are study guides available to assist.

Apply by the deadline. Submit your application before the October deadline. Check the school's website for the specific October date the year you apply.

Prepare academically. Take challenging courses in elementary and middle school. Assign yourself extra math problems in addition to your regular homework. Perfect your writing skills, because two essays are part of the test. Ask your middle school English teacher to provide additional writing assignments and critique your work to help you prepare.

Take a TJ prep course. Students in sixth, seventh and eighth grades can sign up for TJ Test prep courses offered by private companies. These classes are not affiliated with the school.

Obtain study guides. "The Student Handbook for the Admissions Test for Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology" is the official study guide for the TJ Test. This can be downloaded from the school's website. Go over the study guide problems then take the sample test, timing yourself as you would on the actual test day.

Read regularly. Read often and develop your comprehension skills. Keep a dictionary nearby to research new words and increase your vocabulary. Read newspapers and discuss world events with your parents to exercise your comprehension skills.

Stretch your mind. Increase your problem-solving skills by doing more puzzles, word games and reasoning exercises. Ask your middle school math and science teachers to provide homework exercises that will challenge you in logic and reasoning.

Rest, eat and get organized. The night before the test, get plenty of rest and organize any items you need to take with you to the test site. Eat a good breakfast and arrive at the test site early.

Tips & Warnings
The TJ Test is administered the first Saturday of December. In the event of bad weather, the test may be rescheduled for the following Saturday. The testing process lasts four hours.
