Use your NYPL library card to download audiobooks

The New York Public Library offers hundreds of audiobooks you can check out and download. You'll need to have a NYPL library card, just like when you check books out in person, but you can download and listen to audiobooks from anywhere. Audiobooks come in different formats so you can choose files for iPod, Windows devices or basic MP3 files for use on any computer or audio player.

Instructions

      Download and install the Overdrive Media Console from eNYPL Home. The link to the download is in the left menu bar under "Software Downloads." It's a free download, and installation instructions are available on the download page.

      Hover your mouse over "Browse Audiobooks" in the left menu bar of eNYPL Home and click the subject area you want to browse. You can also enter a title or author into the search bar.

      Browse by file type if you want to listen with a particular device. In the left menu bar, choose between "iPod-compatible," "WMA" for Windows users or "MP3" for use on any device.

      Click the audiobook title you want to download and select "Add to eList."

      Add more audiobooks to your eList if you want to check out more than one. Click "Proceed to Checkout" when you're finished browsing.

      Log in with your library card number and PIN. You chose your PIN when you applied for your library card. Choose 7, 14 or 21 days under "Lending period."

      Choose "Confirm Checkout" followed by "Download." When the download box appears, click "Open," choose "OverDrive Media Console" and click "Okay."

      Double-click the title in OverDrive Media Console to play it on your computer, or click "Transfer" in the menu bar and follow the prompts to send the audiobook to your iPod or other MP3 player.
