Directions for Split Ring Tatting
Split ring tatting can be made with a single tatting shuttle. Split rings are used to make tatted lace edges. Split rings are made by wrapping the thread onto itself into a curved line of knots or a half-circle. The first half and the second half of the circles are made with stitches or knots tied in the same direction. They are not flipped half-way through as they would be when tatting a full ring or circle with the thread. Make tatted lace edges and tatted lace bookmarks with split ring tatting.

1
Hold the tatting shuttle in your right hand. Pick up the free end of the thread with the index finger and thumb of your left hand. Hold onto the free end and wrap the thread counter-clockwise behind your left hand index, middle, ring and pinkie fingers. When the thread reaches your thumb, hold onto it with your thumb and index finger. There should now be a loop of thread around your fingers.

2
Make the first tatting double-stitch. Hold your hands in front of you, keep the shuttle in your right hand and the looped string around your left hand. Wrap the long end of the thread around the back of your right hand to drape it behind your right hand while still holding the string loop with your left. Pull the left hand loop taut by holding the top of it up with your middle and ring fingers. Insert the shuttle through the thread loop on your left hand, pass it over the top of the loop and then place it back into your right hand.

3
Lower your left hand ring and middle fingers to slacken the loop slightly. Do not let it come off your left hand. Move your left hand to the right to pull the thread and slip the draped loop of thread off your fingers. The loop will slide to where your left index finger and thumb are holding the thread loop. Pull the loop into a tight knot.
-
4
Make another knot, but this time, pass the shuttle under the thread loop on your left hand, then over the top of the loop before inserting it through the loop that your left fingers are holding. Pull the shuttle away from your left hand to tighten the knot and finish the first tatting double-stitch.
-
5
Make five more tatting double-stitches. Close the split ring of stitches by pulling the shuttle thread taut with your right hand while holding the last stitch or knot you made between your left thumb and index finger. Pull slowly and gently to make a split ring with the stitches.
