How to Draw Pictures Onto a Cake
Add a bit of flair to the next celebration cake with an icing image that coordinates with the party's theme. Even novice cake decorators with limited artistic skills can create a professional looking picture for the cake. You can use a stencil to trace a simple design directly onto the cake, create an image made entirely of royal icing or trace an outline in your favorite icing and fill in the outline on the cake.
Things You'll Need
- Picture or image
- Piece of glass or solid transparent object
- Wax paper
- Small, round icing tip
- Pastry bag
- Royal icing
- Icing (any kind)

Royal Icing Picture

Place the picture on your working surface and place a piece of glass or other solid transparent object on top to create a firm, movable surface. Place a piece of wax paper on top of the glass.

Drop a small, round icing tip into the pastry bag and fill the pastry bag with black royal icing.

Trace around the outside of the image with black icing to make an outline of the picture.

Fill in the outline of the image with different colored royal icing. Make the icing relatively thick to keep its shape without breaking.

Place the glass with the icing-covered wax paper in the freezer for two to three hours to let the icing set.

Remove the paper from the freezer and gently place the wax paper on the cake with the icing side facing downward. Peel the wax paper away from the royal icing picture carefully.
Icing Image Outline

Place the image on your working surface and place a piece of transparent paper, such as wax paper, over top.

Drop a small, round icing tip into a pastry bag and fill the bag with the icing of your choice.

Trace the outline of the image onto the transparent paper with the pastry bag. Make the tracing line relatively thick so that it will transfer onto the cake.

Pick up the icing-covered wax paper and turn it icing side down on the cake. Press very gently, but do not smooth the icing onto the cake.

Remove the wax paper and continue to fill in the picture with icing on the cake.

Tips & Warnings
For professional cake decorating, you can purchase a projection machine to project the image directly onto the cake. Use an airbrush machine to draw in the projected image onto the cake.
For detailed images, print the image from a computer onto a piece of edible frosting paper, remove the paper backing and place the image directly on the cake.
