How to Draw Irish Symbols

A 2B pencil is a great tool for tracing because its lead is soft.

If you are an aspiring artist and in love with Irish symbols, the best way for you to combine both passions is to draw an Irish symbol. However, if you don't know where to begin, start by analyzing the symbol's geometric shape, size, shading and coloration. Familiarize yourself with the symbol's appearance before attempting to draw it. Also, remember that drawing is a combination of technique and shading. Once you've mastered these two aspects, and with some time, patience and a few art supplies, you can effectively tackle this art project with little to no prior art experience.

Instructions

    • 1

Look up online which Irish symbol you want to draw or obtain an hard copy image of the symbol. The Celtic cross, five-fold, trees, knots and trinity are all common images with meaning to the Irish. Use a hard copy as a reference while drawing and copying the image. You can also trace, if needed.

    • 2

Draw the basic geometric figure with a soft lead pencil. Use a ruler to help you with straight lines.

    • 3

Use a blending stump and charcoals to shade the dark areas of the symbol.

    • 4

Explore contrast and shading values. The lightest areas of the symbol are the highlights, so apply less shading with your pencil or charcoal here. The dark values are either the shadow or the coloration. So, pay more attention to this area when applying heavy shadow or colors.

Use coloring pencils or pastels to color symbol. Mimic the hard copy of the image and color as needed.

    • 6

Frame the drawing when finished to prevent smudging or discoloration.
