Permanent coffee filters are both an economic and organic way to brew coffee. The filters, which are a mesh made out of a thin metal, help keep coffee grounds from falling through a paper filter and are less costly since you don't have to constantly buy replacement filters. It is important to clean your permanent coffee filter on a regular basis to keep it at top quality. Choose a permanent coffee filter that fits your coffeemaker. You can buy a coffeemaker that comes with a permanent coffee filter or buy one separately. Your coffeemaker manual will tell you what size of coffee filter you need.

Use the permanent coffee filter just like you would use a regular paper filter. Fill it with the coffee grounds and brew the coffee. When the coffee is done brewing, rinse the coffee filter by running it under hot water until all the grounds are washed away.

Clean your permanent coffee filter about once a week to keep it in top condition. Mix white vinegar with extremely hot water and submerge the filter into it for a couple minutes. Rinse with hot water, dry the filter and return it to the coffeemaker.
