Fabric

Preprinted panels are the perfect material for a first quilt, a quick quilt or a quilt that will get a lot of use, like a baby quilt. They are fast to construct and uncomplicated in design. Spend some time at your local fabric store and choose a favorite design, and you can have a new quilt finished in one weekend or less.

Step 1

Choose your panel design based on how big you want your quilt to be. Decide if you want connecting strips of fabric between the panels, or if this is to be a whole cloth quilt. Purchase all fabric at the same time to avoid shortages or problems matching dye lots.

Step 2

Cut out panels and measure for connecting strip length. Sew panels together with a connecting strip between each one. Connect the rows together with a connecting strip between each row. If this is a whole cloth quilt, skip this step and go on to the next one.

Step 3

Lay the backing fabric out on a table or other clean surface, face down. Smooth the batting on top of the backing, then top with the quilt top, face up. Using a large needle, baste the three layers together, beginning in the center and working towards the edge. Baste the entire quilt with rows about six inches apart.

Step 4

Insert quilt into the quilting hoop, keeping the fabric taut but not stretching it. Quilt the panels as desired. You may follow the design of the panel, perhaps outlining the shapes, or you may quilt an allover design such as a grid or overlapping circles.

Step 5

Remove the quilt from the hoop when all quilting is done. Attach binding to the edge of the quilt. Construct a fabric label detailing your name, location, name of the quilt, the recipients' name and any other relevant information about the quilt that you have and attach it to the back of the quilt.

Tip

For a very fast quilt, use a sewing machine to create a quilted grid instead of hand quilting.
