Measuring your food intake keeps you aware of how many calories you consume at every meal. Restricting yourself to small carbohydrate portions, like 2 oz. of cooked pasta, helps you achieve your dietary goals. However, there are some differences between dry and cooked weight when serving pasta. Weighing pasta in a fluid-ounce measuring tool, like a cup, doesn't give you an accurate weight. You need to weigh the cooked food with the right measuring tool.
Things You'll Need
- Kitchen scale
- Lightweight saucer
- Cooked pasta
Place a kitchen scale on a flat surface. If using a digital scale, turn on the scale and allow it to calibrate.
Place a saucer on the scale. Take the saucer's weight. Write down the weight on a note pad.
Add 2 or 3 tbsp. cooked pasta to the saucer. Note the weight. Subtract the weight of the saucer alone from the weight with the pasta. If this is 2 oz. of pasta, stop adding food. Add or remove food until you have a pasta weight of 2 oz.
Tips & Warnings
- Some kitchen scales have a "tare" function which allows you to exclude the weight of a plate or bowl.
- Remove the saucer from the scale when it is not in use. Leaving the saucer may damage the measuring device.
