How to Reference HTML

HTML (HyperText Markup Language) is a system of tags, enclosed in "<" and ">" brackets, that are used in text-based Web documents to add color, fonts, images, links, and formatting to pages on the Internet. The majority of HTML tags contain two parts: an opening tag and a closing tag. Each opening tag can be modified with one or more attributes that further effect the content of the Web page. When coding an HTML document, it is sometimes necessary to reference the 93 HTML tags and the attributes for each tag.

Instructions

    • 1

Launch your web browser and navigate to an online HTML reference guide.

    • 2

Browse the HTML tag links, or press "CTRL" and "F" to bring up the "Find" window. Type the HTML tag you are searching for into the provided text field, then press "Enter" to highlight it in the Web page.

    • 3

Click to select the HTML tag to open the tag page, which includes available attributes and usage rules for each tag. Notes are available on some HTML reference sites that indicate if the tag is "deprecated," meaning that it has been phased out in the current version of HTML and may not render properly in some Web browsers.

    • 4

Copy and paste or type the HTML tag and attributes into your Web page document as needed.
