How to Make a Distressed Stamp in Illustrator

Adobe Illustrator is a powerful and widely used graphics application. Since it is vector based rather than raster based, there are limitations to the kinds of changes you can make to the graphics produced with it. However, there are still many changes you can make, such as giving a stamp a distressed look.

Instructions

    • 1

Open Illustrator. Select "File" from the menu and choose "New." In the dialog, enter the width and height that you want for your stamp and change the "Raster Effects" to "High." Click "OK."

    • 2

Select the "Ellipse" tool from the toolbar on the left and change the "Fill" to none. Draw the circle on the canvas and then adjust the "Stroke" size until you have a donut-shaped ring for your stamp.

    • 3

Select the "Type" tool and in the options at the top choose the style and size you want for your stamp text. Then type it in the center of the ring. Drag with the "Select" tool to select both elements.

    • 4

Select "Effects" from the menu and choose "Distort and Transform." From the options, choose "Roughen." In the dialog, click on "Preview." Change the "points" to "Smooth," the "Size" to 1 and the "Detail" to 10. Click "OK." Save your work.
