Use a mic on an iPod touch to record voice memos.

The fourth generation iPod touch released in 2010 is the first touch to ship with a built-in microphone. If you've got one of these, your mic is built-in and ready to use. Second and third generation iPod touch owners (2008-2009) can purchase an external microphone to record audio on the touch. First generation users are out of luck, however. Microphones aren't supported on the 2007 touch release.

Instructions

    • 1

Check your iPod software version in iTunes. Plug your touch into your computer and click its name in iTunes. Look for "Software Version" in the Summary tab. You need iOS 3.1 or higher to use a mic on your second or third generation touch.

Decide between a mini microphone that plugs into the headphone jack or a mic that's incorporated into headphones. Mini microphones are little nubs with a jack on the end. Some are shaped like thumbtacks. Mini mics are useful for recording other people. Headphone mics are best for recording yourself because the mic is located close to your mouth.

Purchase a mic. If you have a hard time finding mini mics at big box stores, try your favorite online retailer. The Apple Store stocks earphones with a mic and an iPod remote built into the headphone wire.

Plug the mic into your touch's headphone jack and use it to record audio. The second and third generation touch comes with Voice Memos, a program to record audio notes. Third and fourth generation users also have Voice Control to start and stop music playback with your voice. Check your iPod manual for instructions on using these programs.
