How to Get All the Super Emeralds in "Sonic & Knuckles"

Attach a "Sonic the Hedgehog 3" video game cartridge onto a "Sonic & Knuckles game cartridge. Press the "Sonic the Hedgehog 3" game into the slot on top of the "Sonic & Knuckles" video game until you hear a "click." This indicates that it is attached correctly.

Begin a new save file playing "Sonic the Hedgehog" 3.

Run Sonic or Knuckles into a power ring to collect it. You must collect at least 50 power rings.

Reach the end of the level checkpoint and touch the marker. The Super Power Ring will appear above the end of level checkpoint.

Jump into the Super Power Ring to begin the special stage.

Complete the special stage to earn a Chaos Emerald.

Repeat Steps 1 through 6 to access the second special stage. You can only collect one emerald per special stage, so you must access each special stage to obtain a chaos emerald. The next special stage will automatically become accessible when you complete the stage that preceeds it.

Repeat Steps 1 to 6 seven times to access all seven of the special stages and collect each emerald.

Begin a "Sonic & Knuckles" save file.

Play the first level, the Mushroom Hill zone.

Tips & Warnings
You do not have to find all the emeralds in one shot. Each level contains a super power ring that gives you access to the special stages.
Once you have collected all the chaos emeralds, collect 50 power rings and then perform a double jump to unlock Super Sonic and Super Knuckles. If you do so while in possession of the Super Chaos Emeralds you will unlock Hyper Sonic and Hyper Knuckles.
Using the Super Chaos Emeralds is the only way you can unlock the hidden character, Super Tails.
You do not have to complete this process on a specific stage. Each level will have a Super Power Ring floating above the end of level marker. You must touch the end of level marker with at least 50 power rings collected.
When in the Hyper or Super mode of any character, you must keep at least one power ring in your possession. If your total reaches zero the character will lose his super powers.
All the super characters are invulnerable to attacks from their enemies, however they will still drown if kept under water for too long.
