How to Clean Up a Hiss Using Adobe Soundbooth
Audio recorded onto magnetic tape or a vinyl record is prone to background hiss. Even after you digitize the audio and convert it to MP3 or WAV, the hiss still remains on the recording. If you have Adobe CS3, CS4 or CS5, you can use the noise reduction feature in the included Adobe Soundbooth program to capture a sample of the hiss, then clean the hiss from the recorded audio.
Instructions

1
Launch Adobe Soundbooth. Click "File," then "Open." Double-click the audio file from which you want to remove the hiss.
-
2
Click and drag on the audio waveform to select a portion that contains only hiss. Press the spacebar to preview the selected portion; make sure that it contains no music or vocals.
-
-
3
Right-click the selected portion of the audio file. Hover the mouse over "Processes" and select "Capture Noise Print" from the menu that opens. Soundbooth captures the hiss and loads it into memory.
-
4
Press "Ctrl" and "A" simultaneously to select the entire audio waveform. Right-click the waveform, and hover the mouse cursor over "Processes." Click "Reduce Noise."
-
5
Check the box next to "Use Captured Noise Print" in the box that pops up, if it's not already selected. Move the "Reduction" slider to the right to increase the amount of hiss reduction; move it to the left to use less hiss reduction. Adjust the "Reduce By" slider to determine the number of decibels by which Soundbooth reduces the hiss.
-
6
Click "Preview" to listen to the audio. Adjust the sliders until Soundbooth removes the hiss but leaves the rest of the audio unaffected. Click "OK" to apply the hiss reduction.
