How to Draw a Cartoon of a Hyena

How to Draw a Cartoon of a Hyena thumbnail
A hyena features unique features compared to most dogs.

Drawing a hyena isn't a particularly difficult task, but creating a realistic rendition of this specific animal will take a lot of time and attention to detail. However, if you want to create a cartoonlike image of this carnivorous dog, you can exaggerate any of the physical features to your own liking. Select a picture of a hyena to help you create the basic drawing. Otherwise, use your imagination in select areas to get the intended picture.

Instructions

    • 1

Sketch a medium-sized oval somewhere near the middle of the page to create the basic guideline to the hyena's head. Draw a smaller circle toward the bottom of this head outline to represent the muzzle of the hyena.

    • 2

Draw a peanut-shaped, larger oval just underneath the head of the hyena to create the basic rough draft for the body. Sketch out four slightly bent, vertical lines from the bottom of the body down to act as the guidelines for this animal's legs. The length of these legs and body can be as proportionally realistic as you would like for them to be.

    • 3

Divide the hyena's head into guidelines to help you create the facial features. Draw the oval-shaped eyes as big or as small as you would like for them to be. Draw a small circle inside each of these ovals to represent the pupils.

    • 4

Sketch a rounded, upside-down triangle at the end of the small circle, or muzzle, of the hyena's head. This shape acts as the basis for the hyena's nose; it can be featured as big or as small as you would like it.

    • 5

Curve the underside of the nose into the mouth of the hyena, making some sort of distinguishable emotion apparent in this feature. Curve the mouth upward to reflect a happy hyena or downward to create a sad or mad hyena.

    • 6

Draw semicircular shapes on the top of the hyena's head to create the two ears. Use light, wispy pencil strokes to define the outline of the hyena's head between these ears. Use the same technique to clean up the lines that complete the head, moving down the neck and chest area of this animal.

    • 7

Thicken each of the legs of the hyena so that the basic shape starts to appear. Use small, horizontal lines to define the joints of each leg, appropriately reflecting the way these limbs move. Draw large ovals on the bottom of each leg to create cartoonlike paws, dividing each one into evenly spaced out toes.

    • 8

Curve the underside of the hyena's belly until it reaches the section where the hind leg is formed. Create a slightly curved, vertical line up into the middle of the body to form the thigh of this hind leg. Attach a long, tubular paw to the bottom of the hind leg joint, detailing this feature just like the front paws.

    • 9

Round out the rear end and back of the hyena using short, rigid lines to create a hairy texture. Create the tail of this animal using long, wispy lines.

    • 10

Add small circular shapes throughout the hyena's body and face to create the unique coat pattern that this animal features. Do not fill in these spots just yet, though.

    • 11

Trace all of the necessary lines that define this particular animal with the ink pen. Use caution during this process, as you do not want to smear any of the lines or trace over any of the guidelines you used to create this drawing. Let the ink dry. Completely erase any remaining pencil marks from the page. Fill in all of the spots with the ink pen.
