How to Write a Rule as a Function of a Number Sold

A function helps you solve for a relationship between variables. For example, if your function is number sold, then you want to calculate number sold. You need to find variables that you have available to calculate number sold. You should know your total sales and sales price of each object. These will be your variables in order to calculate number sold. If these variables change, then the formula numbers get updated and provide you with a new number sold.

Instructions

    • 1

      Write "f(number sold)=."

    • 2

Divide the total number of Product A by the sales price of that product as the next part of the function. You function should look like "f(number sold)= Product A total sales / sales price."

    • 3

Perform the same calculation for any other products that you want to determine the number sold. So, you need to add a "+" if you have any other objects you sell and then use the same function from the previous step but change the product to Product B, then Product C and so forth. Your function now will look like "f(number sold)= (Product A total sales / sales price) + (Product B total sales / sales price)." This is your written rule as a function.

Enter your variables into your function to solve the function. In the example, if you had sales of $50 for Product A that sells for $2 and $100 of sales of Product B that sells for $50, then your function is f(number sold)=($50/$2)+($100/$50). The answer then is 27 units sold.
