Record memos or use Voice Control with earphones with a built in mic.

The fourth-generation iPod touch comes with a built-in mic you can begin using immediately. While the second- and third-generation models of the device do not have built-in mics, owners of a second- and third-generation iPod touch can purchase an external mini mic that plugs into the headphone jack to use with their iPods. Alternatively, users can purchase earphones with a built-in mic. You can use the mini mic to record voice memos or use the Voice Control feature to control music playback on your iPod touch.

Instructions

    • 1

Plug an external mini mic into your headphone jack. You can also plug in an earphone/mic combo device.

    • 2

Hold down the Home button until you hear a beep and the display says "Voice Control" to activate music playback voice commands.

    • 3

Say a Voice Control command to call up a particular artist or song, or to shuffle music. You can also ask what song is playing or what the current time is. A full list of commands is listed in your device manual.

    • 4

Tap the Voice Memos app to record a memo. Tap the "Record" button to start recording with the external mic you have connected. If you've got earphones with a built-in mic, press the middle button on the mic to start recording. Tap "Stop" or press the earphone mic again to end the recording.

    • 5

Unplug your mic from the headphone jack when you're finished with it, if applicable. If you've got a built-in or earphone mic you won't need to do anything and can continue using the earphones as normal.

Tips & Warnings

  • Consider purchasing earphones with a built-in mic if you record a lot of voice memos. The mic is conveniently placed near your mouth and you can press the mic directly to start and stop recording.

  • The first-generation iPod touch released in 2007 doesn't support microphones.
