How to Draw Cool Werewolves

Werewolves, with their half man, half canine features, have been a part of movies and comic books for generations. Along with Frankenstein, the Mummy and Dracula, the werewolf is one of the classic original monsters. The werewolf as a drawing subject offers artists the opportunity to use individual artistic expression to deliver a range of original takes on a classic theme.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw a heart shape for the face. Draw lines beginning in the dip of the heart shape and extending over the heart in both directions. The lines should extend on each side of the upper portion of the heart and gradually meet in the middle and just above. This is the fur of the werewolf's head.

    • 2

Draw two sideways ovals for the eyes, then begin a line centered and just below the eyes. Extend this line toward the left edge of the paper (your left) just long enough to create a snout. Bring the line around and draw it back toward the face, then curve it back toward the left edge of the paper. This creates the open mouth.

    • 3

Sketch a top and bottom row of fangs in the space you created as you drew the upper and lower portion of the mouth. Add a tongue on the bottom inside of the snout by drawing two lines extending from the inside back of the mouth to just beyond the opening. Connect the lines at the tip to form the tongue. Draw four or five teardrop-shapes around some of the teeth and the tongue to create the illusion of saliva.

    • 4

Draw a body on your werewolf. Begin a line on one side of the head and extend it toward the bottom of the paper, then begin a line for a shoulder on the opposite side. Draw an arm on either side of the upper body lines using two vertical lines set wide enough apart to create the size you want the arms to be. Sketch hands with long lines to extend the fingers. Add claws at the tip of each finger.

    • 5

Bring the lines in at about where you will want the waist to be, then branch out from the waist to form the hips. Draw the legs of the werewolf next, creating each by drawing two vertical lines extending to the bottom edge of the paper. Draw two rounded shapes at the end of each legs for feet, then draw extended lines from the end of each foot to create the claws.

    • 6

Sketch torn clothes on your werewolf. Draw a series of jagged lines across the waistline of your werewolf to create the bottom edge of a ripped shirt. Draw jagged lines on the arms to create ripped sleeves. Add the same jagged lines across each knee to create the look of torn pants.

    • 7

Shade all areas of the wolf that aren't covered by clothing using angled strokes of the pencil. Allow the shading to overlap, which will eventually create the look of werewolf fur. Color the eyes darker, add shading beneath them and around the nose to create depth. Color the ripped clothing solid to set it apart from the fur.
