How to Tie a Basic Tie

Tying a necktie is easy with practice.

Neckties are worn for business, formal and special events. Neckties are traditionally worn with button-up shirts that have open collars. There are multiple ways to tie a necktie, some more elaborate than others. The four-in-hand knot is the simplest method of tying a necktie and can be used by beginners to create a professional looking knot. Once tied, a the bottom of the necktie should rest at the top of the belt buckle or just below.

1. Button all buttons on your shirt including the topmost one. Flip the collar of the shirt upward. Place the necktie around your neck over the shirt just below the collar. The top side of the tie should be facing outward with the wider end on the right side.

2. Pull the wider end of the tie so it is about 12 inches longer than the thinner end. Cross the wide end over the thin end and bring it behind the thin end. The two lengths should cross near the neck and the back side of the wide end should be facing outward.

3. Bring the wide end up and around the thin end once more. The top side of the wide end should be facing outward. Tuck the wide end underneath the thin end and bring it up and through the loop around your neck. Pull the wide end completely through the loop.

4. Pull the wide end, with the top side facing outward, through the front loop of the knot. The top side should be facing outward. Pull the wide end completely through the knot's loop. Hold the onto the thin end of the tie with one hand with sliding the knot upwards to tighten the loop around your neck.

5. Fold down your shirt collar over the tie. Position the knot of the tie in the center of the shirt. Tuck the thin end through the loop located on the backside of the wide end.
