How to Make Dr Seuss Character Costumes

Flip through your favorite Dr. Seuss books for inspiration for your costume. Also, look through your closet or costume drawer to see what kind of items you could use to recreate some of these characters.

Dress as Thing 1 and invite a friend to be Thing 2. For each costume, buy any kind of wig that stands on end and spray paint it blue, or make your own hair look wild by spiking it with a strong hair gel and coloring it with blue hair spray. Find a red jumpsuit, footed pajamas or a leotard. Use a circle of white felt and write "Thing 1" with a black marker on it. Pin the circle on the chest of the costume.

Create a Cat in the Hat costume, starting with the character's famous large headpiece. Using a piece of sturdy poster board, fold and tape the paper into a cylindrical shape that will fit on the top of your head. Cut out a doughnut-shaped ring to create the brim of this hat. Paint red and white stripes up and down the creation. Pair the hat with a black shirt and pants and add a red tie or scarf around your neck. Attach an oval piece of white fake fur on your chest and stomach with safety pins. Use eyeliner to draw whiskers on your face.

Make a Cindy Lou Who costume. Find a red cape and sew fuzzy white trim all around its edges. Wear it over a plaid dress with red tights and buckle shoes. Use blush or pink paint to create rosy circles on either cheek and glue on long, fake eyelashes. The hair is the most important accessory for this costume. To recreate the Cindy Lou hairdo, start with a foam cone, which you can find at most craft stores. Glue it to a headband and cover it with a wig or fake hair that will match your natural hair color. Tie your hair in a braid on either side of your head. Lace a flattened wire hanger through each braid, and bend the wire to make it and the hair stand in a U shape. Complete the look by tying red bows at the end of all three hair pieces.
