How to Make Your Shoelaces Checkered
Checkerboard lacing is a style seen on skate shoes and other shoes that tie up with laces. This style uses two different colored shoelaces to create a checkerboard effect. Not only does checkerboard look cool, it is also quite practical because you do not have to untie and tie your shoes each time you wear them. Since you are tying up your shoelaces into a pattern, you should only do checkerboard lacing on a shoe that you can comfortably slip your foot in and out of without having to adjust the laces each time. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Lace up your shoe with one colored lace using the straight lace technique. To do this, run the lace through the top right rivet, and back up through the rivet underneath the first.
-
2
Bring the lace across, then under to the next rivet. Continue this pattern until you bring the lace over and through the bottom left rivet. Bring the lace up and through the empty top rivet hole on the left side of the shoe.

3
Grab the second colored lace and start weaving it up through the straight lace near the bottom of the shoe. Bring it under the bottommost straight lace on the right side and weave it under, then above each of the subsequent straight laces.
-
4
Fold the lace around the top straight lace when you reach the top, and continue the weaving pattern down, in a row next to the weave you just made. Continue this pattern until you have woven a checkerboard pattern.
-
5
Tuck the loose ends of your laces inside the shoe to conceal them when you run out of room or laces to thread.
