Make the Hat
-
1
Cut out a large half circle on the black foam sheets. If your sheets are not big enough to make the hat in one piece, tape two pieces together before cutting out the shape for the top of the hat. A child's size hat should measure approximately 15 inches long at the base of the half circle and extend to 8 inches long at the highest point of the half circle curve.
-
2
Roll the half circle into a cone shape. Glue along the edge to secure the hat and keep it from unraveling.
-
-
3
Cut out a large circle approximately 15 inches in circumference from the black foam sheets to make the brim of the hat.
-
4
Place the cone-shaped hat in the center of the brim circle and trace around the base of it. Draw another circle inside the first circle smaller than the first by approximately one inch. Measure one inch in from the larger circle, drawing lines to mark the placement. Do this around the circle in six evenly spaced places. Connect the lines into a circle to mark out the cutting line. Cut out the smaller circle.
-
5
Fold up the inner circle on the hat brim, cutting slits where necessary to keep the brim piece flat.
-
6
Glue along the folded-up edge of the hat brim. Attach the hat to the brim, placing the folded edge of the brim on the inside of the hat to secure.
-
7
Cut out two circles in the black foam measuring approximately nine inches in circumference. Glue along the edge of the foam to secure the ears to the hat.
-
8
Cut a piece of ribbon approximately 12 inches long. Wrap around the hat and tie in a bow at the front of the hat.
