How to Cover Hangers With Lanyard

Dress up boring hangers with lanyard.

You can make traditional wire hangers from the dry cleaners more appealing by wrapping them with lanyard, also known as plastic lace. If you don't have any wire hangers, you can use plastic ones, too. The lanyard will make the hangers have a better grip, so that your clothing won't slide off. Add padding to the hangers by wrapping old plastic bags around them first, then wrapping the lanyard. Use multiple colors of lanyard for a vibrant hanger.

Instructions

    • 1

Stretch out a plastic bag, if you would like to include one, and tape the handles to the hanger on the right side of the hook. Wrap the bag around the hanger, then tape the other end to it once you've wrapped the entire bag. Continue taping and wrapping bags until you've covered the entire hanger. Leave the hook of the hanger alone so that you can still hook it over a closet rod.

    • 2

Unspool about 1 yard of plastic lace or lanyard. Don't cut it just yet. If you're using more than one color, unspool a yard from each lanyard.

    • 3

Gather the ends of the lanyard together, then tape to the hanger, next to the hook, over top of the bags if you used them.

    • 4

Wrap the hanger with the lanyard. It may be a bit tricky, especially if the spools are large and you use more than one color. Wrap the three sides of the lanyard until you return to the starting point. Make your wrapping very tight so that neither the hanger nor the plastic bags show through. Some overlapping of the lanyard is okay.

    • 5

Cut the lanyard once you've wrapped all the way around, leaving about 6 inches of excess. Wrap the extra 6 inches around the hook of the hanger, then tape in place. Do your best to conceal the tape.
