How to Use Corn Roasters

Fairs, carnivals, jubilees and flea markets aren't complete without roasted corn. Vendors can cook as many as 500 ears of roasted corn per hour in large corn roasters. This can be a profitable business opportunity, as long as you can properly operate the corn roaster. Corn roasters depend on propane to light the fire, and a motor to move the rotisserie around the machine in order to roast the corn properly. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Check the parts of the roaster, such as the shaft and sprocket, to ensure that everything is properly seated and didn't become dislodged during transport. Not all roasters have sprockets. The baskets must also be level before you can begin operating the roaster.

    • 2

Oil the chain with corn or vegetable oil. Lubricate all bearings with a multipurpose synthetic grease.

    • 3

Remove all chain guards from the motor and cooking chassis.

    • 4

Plug the power cord connected to the motor into a compatible power outlet.

    • 5

Turn the star-shaped hand wheel on both propane tanks to turn them on.

    • 6

Set the temperature on the thermostat to 575 degrees Fahrenheit. The thermostat is often located near the pilot light.

    • 7

Raise the shield on the bottom front of the corn roaster. Press and hold the red button to disperse gas. Hold a flame to the pilot light to light it. Continue to hold the red button for 45 to 60 seconds, and lower the shield. Allow the roaster to preheat for 10 to 12 minutes, or until the roaster is no longer smoking.

    • 8

Set the corn cobs in the baskets. Make sure the tassel end of each cob faces outward and the cob doesn't extend beyond the basket. Load the corn evenly, and don't stack ears on top of each other. Some baskets will only hold two to three ears of corn.

    • 9

Press the start button to begin the roasting process. Press the stop button after the corn has finished roasting. Roasting typically takes between 25 to 30 minutes. The corn will have uneven black roast marks all over it when it is completely roasted.

    • 10

Remove the corn from the basket with a pair of long tongs. The corn will be very hot at first, and should not be touched directly with your hand. Place the corn atop a piece of foil or plate to cool.

Tips & Warnings

  • While roasting, make sure that the corn baskets are level and the motor belt has not slipped. If any of these problems occur, turn off the roaster and wait for it to cool down. Then, remove the ears of corn and realign all of the mechanical elements before restarting the roaster.
