How to Find the End of a Skein of Yarn

The end of the yarn is tucked into the center of the skein.

Whether you knit or crochet, you use the same types of yarn and fiber, which typically come rolled into a skein. While a skein of yarn typically has a visible end laid along the outside of the yarn, there is also a hidden inner end at the center of the skein. Pulling out the inner end of yarn to work with allows you avoid having the skein roll over and over as you tug from the outside. Finding the end of the skein is the first step in using the yarn from the center.

Instructions

    • 1

Slide your thumb and forefinger into one of the hollows on the ends of the skein.

    • 2

Move your fingers into the skein until they are at the middle of the mass of yarn.

    • 3

Grasp a pinch of yarn from the center and pull it out gently.

    • 4

Look for the loose end. The loose end will either be in your pinch of yarn or it may be dragged out behind it.

    • 5

Pull the loose end straight and wrap the length of yarn that pulled out with it around the body of the skein. After that yarn is used up, you will be pulling your yarn from the center.
