Install plug-ins and view MPG files in Firefox.

Mozilla Firefox's basic shell program is used mainly as an HTML-based Web browser, but it is capable of many additional functions if you install Firefox add-ons. Employ Firefox to stream videos within the main browser interface, but only with the proper setup. If you have a saved MPG file that you want to play back in Firefox, you need the right plug-ins. Enabling MPG playback only takes a few minutes.

Instructions

    • 1

      Visit Mozilla's Add-on website at addons.mozilla.org.

    • 2

Click "Plugins" from the list of options on the left-hand side of the screen.

    • 3

Scroll through the available plug-ins, and click "Download Now" next to the QuickTime plug-in. QuickTime is required for Firefox to properly playback MPG videos. Any streaming online MPG videos will now work in Firefox. If you want to open a desktop video, you need to take additional steps.

    • 4

Right-click on the desktop file you want to open in Firefox.

    • 5

Hover your cursor over "Open With" and then click "Firefox." If you want files to open in Firefox by default from now on, click "Choose Default Program" and select "Firefox" from the list of options.
