How to Clean Plywood Stairs

Plywood stairs typically consist of harder plywood, creating a surface that's strong and durable, capable of withstanding heavy use over years. While plywood stairs are unlikely to receive the same advanced finishing used with other hardwoods, they still require regular cleaning, not only for visual appeal, but also to prevent damage to the steps from being covered over by dirt or debris. The lack of elaborate finishing materials on the steps actually makes cleaning them a simpler process than cleaning other wooden stair materials. There's no need to deal with wax buildup or dulling stains. You just sweep, wash and seal, cleaning the surface quickly and efficiently in a few short steps. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Use a stiff bristled broom to sweep any dirt or debris from the stairway beginning with the top step and working your way down.

    • 2

Fill a hand sprayer with a degreasing cleaner and then spray any grease or oil spills on the plywood with the liquid. Allow the liquid to penetrate the grease for about five minutes. Scrub the stain clear with a scrub brush, using a small circular motion to lift the stain from the wood. Keep the force used to scrub the stain away light, allowing the bristles of the brush to do all of the cleaning for you.

    • 3

Rinse the degreasing cleanser from the steps then switch to a wood cleaner. Spray the wood cleaner onto the steps and then clean each step using a sponge, beginning at the top and working your way down to avoid splashing dirty cleaning solution onto already cleaned steps. Rinse the cleanser away with clean water before moving onto the next lower step. Allow the stairs to air dry.

Tips & Warnings

  • Apply a protective no-skid polyurethene finish to the stairs every two years, or once the stairs begin to show evidence of wear from use.
