How to Make a Straight Hemp Bracelet

A straight hemp bracelet is a made with 4 strands of hemp twine. The straight braid, or knot, bracelet is made with 2 different types of alternating knots. The alternating knot pattern creates a flat, straight line with the hemp. Once you learn the 2 different knots, you will find that making the straight hemp bracelet takes no time at all. Instructions

    • 1

Cut a 20-inch piece and a 6-foot piece of hemp twine. Fold each piece in half by bringing the ends together. Hold the looped ends of both folded-over pieces of twine together. Tie the looped ends of the twine together by making a simple overhand knot 1 inch down from the loops.

    • 2

Pin the knotted loop ends of the twine to your pant leg with a large safety pin. Hold the free ends in your hands. Separate the hemp ends from left to right in this order: a long end (left-most strand), a short end (middle strand), a short end (middle strand), a long end (right-most strand). The 2 short middle strands are the base -- the strands that you will knot the long pieces of hemp onto.

    • 3

Make the first type of knot for the straight hemp bracelet. Cross the right-most strand over the 2 middle strands, and pass it under the left-most strand to make a backwards 4 shape. Cross the left-most strand under the 2 middle strands, and insert it through the loop of the backwards 4 shape made by the right-most strand. Pull the right-most strand and the left-most strand tight to tie the first knot.

    • 4

Make the second type of knot for the straight bracelet. Cross the left-most strand over the top of the 2 middle strands and under the right-most strand to make a 4 shape. Cross the right-most strand under the 2 middle strands, and insert the end through the loop of the 4 shape made by the left-most strand. Pull the left-most strand and right-most strand tight to tie the second knot.

    • 5

Alternate between the first and second knot to tie the straight hemp bracelet. Tie the knots until the bracelet is 6 inches long. Hold all 4 strand ends together, and tie them into a simple overhand knot just under the last knot of the bracelet. Trim the ends to make them even.
