How to Learn About Atoms for Fifth Graders
Getting a full handle on atomic theory requires a working knowledge of chemistry and physics. However, the atom is the basic unit of matter and so it is an important topic for you to understand. By using a few different approaches to learning about atoms, you can make sure you cover a vast array of material in exciting ways. With a carefully thought-out plan and some preparation you can become amateur scientists in no time!

1
Create a model to develop a sense of what an atom looks like. Find a picture of an atom, like the one on ShutterStock, and build a model out of foam or papier mache based on the picture.
-
2
Learn key terms and features. Know what it is (the basic unit of matter) and what it does (acts as a building block for all things that exist in the universe). Prepare flashcards with key terms along with simple definitions; write the word on one side of the card and its definition on the other. Use such terms as "nucleus," "proton," "electron," "fission," and "fusion."

-
3
Take a quiz. Use a quiz game, such as NeoK12 or BrainPop, to test yourself and your knowledge about the atom. Study your materials to prepare for the quiz and then take and re-take the quiz until you are able to get all or most answers correct.
