How to Convert a Pool Filter to Saltwater
A saltwater pool uses two main components to produce free chlorine that cleans the pool. These components are the pool filter and the chlorine generator. These two pieces of equipment work together to continually clean and sanitize the water. Without the pool filter, the chlorine generator cannot move the water through the electrolytic cells and produce chlorine. When switching to a saltwater pool, there is no need to replace or change the filter. Simply add the generator in line with the rest of the filtration system and enjoy the softer water. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Chlorine generator
- PVC or plastic hose (depending on your existing water lines)
- PVC glue (if needed)
- Hacksaw
- PVC pipe
- Extension cord
Instructions
-
-
1
Turn the pool accessories off, and unplug them if possible.
-
2
Locate the water line that travels from the pump back to the pool. If you have a heater after the pump, choose the line leaving the heater that runs back into the pool.
-
-
3
Remove the line from the return valve of the pool. You may have to cut the PVC piping to remove it.
-
4
Insert this line from the filter (or heater) onto the intake on the chlorine generator. Run a new line from the outflow of the generator to the return valve on the pool.
-
5
Power the generator with an extension cord or by having an electrician wire it to your filter pump power.
-
6
Dissolve the required amount of salt into the pool and run the filter only for 24 hours.
-
7
Turn on the generator and enjoy.
