How to Keep Calm at a Doctor's Office


It is not uncommon for individuals to experience anxiety and tension when heading to the doctor's office. In fact, many patients are wrongly diagnosed as being hypertensive, when actually they are experiencing something known as white coat syndrome. This condition is triggered by the idea of seeing a doctor, and being in the clinical environment. If you suffer from anxiety when you head to the doctor's office, there are steps you can take to remain calm and anxiety-free.

  • Identify what concerns you. If you can identify what is making you anxious, you are more likely to be able to manage your anxiety. Take some time to try and understand what concerns you have about the doctor, maybe even going back to a childhood memory.

  • Stop drinking water before your doctor appointment. This step may sound strange, but it is a known fact that reducing your water intake prior to your appointment will help in lowering your blood pressure.

  • Take your time. Whatever you do, allow plenty of time to get to your appointment. You don't want to be rushing and running late for your appointment or your blood pressure will absolutely increase. Walk into your appointment slowly. Minimize the physical exertion prior to your appointment.

  • Stay calm. Do whatever it takes to try and keep yourself calm. If you enjoy music, listen to music, or if you like to read or pray, take a book or prayer book with you to your appointment. Close your eyes and meditate, if that relaxes you.

  • Bring along support. If you know that you have a fear of going to the doctor, be proactive and take someone with you that can support you. If you have a relative or close friend that is calm and could provide you the calm support you need, ask them to help you with your fear.

  • Talk to your doctor. If your anxiety about your appointment does not subside with these steps, talk to your doctor and ask for their recommendations. They may be able to prescribe you some kind of sedative or medication for anxiety.
