How to Convert Knots to KM

How to Convert Knots to KM thumbnail
Knots can be converted to kilometers quite easily.

Long ago, sailors needed a way to measure the speed of their vessels. Their solution was to tie equally distanced knots into a long spool of rope. Then one end was tied to a wedge shape and thrown behind the vessel. While the boat was moving, one sailor held the spool of rope, and another turned over an hourglass. After 30 seconds elapsed, they counted the number of knots of rope that exited the spool. In this way, they could determine the speed they were traveling. Because many people choose to measure nautical speed in kilometers per hour, rather than knots, it is helpful to know how to convert these units of measurement.
