How to Be Invisible When Logged Into Facebook

Facebook chat is available to all members on the social networking site.

Facebook will never allow other users to see when you've viewed their profile. If you log into chat, however, friends will be able to see that you are actively browsing the site. If you want to log in to chat, but remain invisible to some of your contacts, create a friend list. When you create lists, it is possible to be logged in to the chat service but remain hidden from some or most of your friends.

Instructions

1. Click on the "Most Recent" link on the Facebook homepage and select "Create Friend List" from the menu.

2. Enter a name for the list in the "Enter a Name" field and then select friends for the list by clicking on their names. Click the blue "Create List" icon to save the new friend list.

3. Click on the gray "Chat" icon in the bottom right corner of any Facebook screen.

4. Click on the white circle next to the name of your list, which will appear just under the toolbar at the top of the chat window. The slider will move to the left, and the green bar will disappear. You are invisible to that group of friends, though you remain logged into the chat program.

5. Go to the "Options" tab at the top of the chat window and select "Go Offline" to be hidden from all friends.
