How to Convert Hip Sizes
Clothing sizes in the United States in the 1940s and '50s used to be based on a set of standards created after compiling height and weight statistics. Although sewing pattern manufacturer's still use these standard sizes, most clothing manufacturers have drifted away from these size ranges and use their own size charts to determine clothing size. While most bottoms size charts have ranges of hip measurements in common, where possible use the specific size chart for clothing, using your own waist and hip measurements.

1
Measure your hips at the widest part using the measuring tape and note the measurement.
-
2
Consult the clothing manufacturer's sizing chart to determine your size (many bottoms also need your waist measurement). For example, Overstock.com places you in a US size medium, number size 8, if your hips measure 38 inches.

3
Convert your hip measurements from inches to centimeters to determine your European size by multiplying your measurement by 2.54. Use this measurement to check against each manufacturer's size charts.
