How to Replace the My Music Folder Icon in Windows XP
The Windows XP operating system uses a boring yellow icon for any given folder stored on your computer. While there is a way to spice up folders with more exciting custom icons, the "My Music" folder is a default Windows XP folder, which means it can't be directly changed. Fortunately, there is a workaround available that only requires creating a shortcut to the "My Music" folder and then changing the icon on the new shortcut.
Instructions
-
-
1
Open the "Start" menu and click the "My Documents" option. If the "My Documents" folder isn't included in the list of folders, click "My Computer" and double-click the "Documents" folder in the new window.
-
2
Scroll through the list of folders in the "My Documents" window until you find the "My Music" folder. Right-click the folder and select the option labeled "Create Shortcut." Click the newly created shortcut and drag it to your desktop, or leave it in the "My Documents" window if you want it to remain in the same location.
-
-
3
Right-click the newly created shortcut and click "Rename." Highlight the text labeled "Shortcut to" and press "Delete" so the folder's name only reads "My Music."
-
4
Right-click the shortcut folder again and click "Properties." Navigate to the "Shortcut" tab and click the "Change Icon" button at the bottom of the window. Click the image you want to use in the list of default pictures, or instead click "Browse" if you want to use a picture saved on your hard drive. Click the name of the file and click "OK."
-
5
Click "OK" to save the new icon on your "My Music" shortcut folder.

Tips & Warnings
If you don't want to use a shortcut, you may want to instead store your music files in a folder other than the default "My Music" folder. Right-click the folder containing the music files and select "Properties." Navigate to the "Customize" tab and click the "Change Icon" button underneath the "Folder Icons" heading. Click the icon you want to use and click "OK" to save the change.
Windows XP only allows you to use images with the ".ico" extension as folder icons. If the picture you want to use isn't in the correct file format, navigate to an ICO conversion site such as "Online ICO Converter." Click "Browse" and double-click the name of the image file you want to convert. Click "Convert" to change the file to the correct file type. Click "OK" to save the new file to your computer.
