How to Mix a Filling Mortar

Mixing filling mortar is a process that can be done in just a few minutes with some basic tools. Mortar is a mixture of cement, lime and sand that is mixed together by adding water. You can get the right texture for the mortar by adding water a little at a time, or if the mixture is too wet, add small amounts of sand and cement. The mortar begins to set in about 10 to 15 minutes, so mix only what you can use in that time.

Things You'll Need

• Metal wheelbarrow
• Portland cement
• Lime
• Sand
• Shovel
• Mason hoe
• Water

Instructions

1. Fill a metal wheelbarrow with one shovel full of cement, one shovel full of lime and six shovels full of sand.

2. Mix the ingredients in the wheelbarrow with a mason hoe until they are completely blended together.

3. Pour one gallon of water into the wheelbarrow, and blend the water into the mixture with the mason hoe until it is completely saturated.

4. Add small amounts of water to the mixture and blend it into the batch until the mortar is about the texture of soft mud.
