Poodle puppies need regular deworming to stay healthy.

Worms are one of the most common afflictions for puppies. They infect more than 90 percent of all puppies, according to poodle expert Janice Biniok. In some cases, these parasites can transfer from dogs to humans. Because of this, worming is one of the single most important things you can do to improve your toy poodle puppy's health, and your own. Worming should start as soon as a poodle puppy reaches two weeks of age.

Instructions

    • 1

Know your puppy's age. Worming should start at two weeks of age. If you got a puppy from a breeder, find out when it was last wormed. If the puppy is your own dog's, start treatment at the 14-day mark.

    • 2

Worm the puppy every two weeks until it is three months old. Toy poodle puppies are most susceptible to worm infestations during these early months, so frequent worming is important.

    • 3

Worm the puppy once a month from three to six months of age. If the puppy shows any signs of diarrhea, is vomiting or has a bloated belly, take it to the vet to have it checked for worms. Dogs can be infected even if they've been treated.

    • 4

Use adult heartworm prevention treatment on your poodle after six months of age. Have your veterinarian prescribe a treatment that is effective against hookworms and roundworms as well as heartworm.

Tips & Warnings

  • Check your area's prevalence of worms to decide how often to administer heartworm treatment to an adult toy poodle. Your veterinarian can advise you.
