How Do I Mute My Modem?

How Do I Mute My Modem? thumbnail
Mute your computer's modem to eliminate annoying dial-up noise.

The sound that you hear when connecting to the Internet via a dial-up connection is your modem dialing -- much like a telephone or fax line dials during calls and transmissions. The series of beeps, dial tones and static can be loud and disruptive to others in your home, as well as annoying to you. You can disable, or mute, this sound by changing your modem's settings.

Instructions

    • 1

Click the "Start" button on the lower left-hand corner of your desktop screen. It will say "Start" or appear as a circle with a multicolored window inside.

    • 2

Click on "Control Panel" from the list of programs and options that appears.

    • 3

Double-click the icon for "Hardware and Sound."

    • 4

Double-click the icon for "Phone and Modem Options."

    • 5

Click on the tab marked "Modems" and click once on your modem from the list, to highlight it.

    • 6

Click the button below the list marked "Properties." Set the speaker volume to "Off" in the box of settings that appears.
