How to Create a Ning

Ning is a unique online platform that allows users to not only join communities, but to create Ning groups or social networks of their own. These social networks can cover just about any topic. Users can create a free Ning group for up to thirty days. After the one-month trial, the owner will receive a monthly fee based on the plan they've selected. To create a Ning group, users must create an account if they haven't done so already and go through a series of prompts to build their new site.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide what topic your Ning group will focus on. Pick a general topic such as "Writing" and then branch down into specific areas such as "Genre," "Age Group," "Ebooks" or "Self-Publishing." Make sure your topic has a large audience as you'll need the help of your community to pay for Ning once the thirty-day trial has expired.

Go to ning.com and click on the orange "Get Started Now" button at the top of the page. Select the plan that's right for your focus group and click on the "Sign Up" button. Type in your name, email address and password.

    • 3

Confirm the creation of your account by making sure you've selected the right plan, typing in the name of your Ning group, and entering your payment information. Cancel your account before the thirty days are up to avoid paying the automatic monthly fee. Click on the "Complete" button once you're ready to continue.

Customize your Ning page by selecting your country, the category that best describes your Ning group and if you'd like to set the group to "Public" or "Private." Set your Ning to "Private" until you're happy with how it looks, then change the status to "Public" and start inviting individuals.

Change your layout and features by clicking on the "Features Layout" link, under the "Settings" heading in the menu to your left. Use the "Appearance" link to change things such as your personal profile and blog posts.

    • 6

Change your plan or cancel at any time by clicking the "My Network" tab at the top of your dashboard, and then the "My Account" link. Click on the "Cancel Free Trial" link to close your Ning group, or on "Change Plan" to downgrade or upgrade your Ning services.
