Write a topic sentence that is general and can be further developed. For example, your topic sentence can read as follows: "My past work experience qualifies me for this position." Make sure that it is not too specific. Topic sentences are the first sentences in a paragraph.

Follow up with a topic elaboration sentence. These sentences develop your topic sentences. Here, you would write about your work experience. For example, if the job you are applying for is in customer service, you would talk about what good work you did on a previous customer service job. If you haven't held a similar position, then discuss situations where you exercised skills that are necessary for good customer service.

Take care that your elaboration sentences are related to your topic sentences. As you finish each paragraph, ask yourself whether or not the elaboration sentences within address at least some aspect of each paragraph's topic sentence. Doing so will create coherence and unity within your letter, thereby improving your chances of getting the job.
