How to Crochet a Slouchy Beret
Next to stocking caps, berets are possibly the most frequently made head-gear made by those who crochet. A beret can be quite simple to make, although there is a bit more need to measure and adjust for size than with a one-size-fits-all stocking cap. For this single-crochet beret, you need to measure head size and stop crocheting when the dimensions are right to fit. Sport weight yarn is light weight, between fine baby weight yarn and the worsted you might use for a sweater.

1
Place a slip knot on the hook. Create a chain stitch wrapping the yarn over the hook and pulling a new loop through the slip knot. Make four more chain stitches for a total of six stitches. Then draw up another loop and pull it through the first loop on the chain, creating a circle.

2
Single crochet two stitches in each of the six single crochets of the circle for a total of 12 stitches. Do this by slipping your hook through the top two threads of the chain stitch, draw up another loop and pull it through, leaving two loops on your hook. Draw up another loop and pull it through both loops on your hook.

Single crochet in the next stitch, then put two stitches in the next. Repeat this pattern around for a total of 18 stitches. You may wish to begin using a stitch marker at this point, to mark the ends of the rounds.

Single crochet two stitches in the next stitch, then one single crochet in the next two and repeat for a total of 24 stitches. Continue with the next round, putting two stitches in the first stitch, then putting one stitch in the next three. For each round begin with two single crochets in one stitch, then increasing the number of single crochet stitches by one each time. You should have six two-stitch single crochets in each round.

5
Crochet one round of one single crochet stitch in each previous stitch when the flat, round work reaches 10 inches. This is your beret top.
-
6
Skip every 10th stitch in each row. This decreases the crochet and creates the underside of the beret. When the inside edge reaches your head size, crochet two rows with one single crochet in each stitch. Clip the yarn and weave the short end back through a few stitches to secure.

Tips & Warnings
For round work like this, it is useful to use stitch markers for the end of your rounds. These can be purchased at yarn and fabric stores, or use a safety pin or paper clip.
