How to Troubleshoot a Floppy FDD

Though floppy disk drives are rarely installed in new computers, being replaced by USB pen drives and CD/DVD trays, they are still found in older systems and server-based systems. You can run software diagnostics utilities to troubleshoot a floppy disk drive in a Windows environment. The utilities not only fix the hardware but also the disks themselves.

Instructions

    • 1

Boot up your Windows computer and press the "F8" key when you see the "Starting Windows..." message. This puts the computer into a state that lets you run diagnostics tools.

    • 2

Right-click "My Computer" and click "Properties." Click the "Device Manager" tab.

    • 3

Double-click the entry marked "Floppy Disk Controllers" and click the floppy drive you want to troubleshoot. Right-click and select "Properties."

    • 4

Click the "Original Configuration (Current)" check box. Click "OK."

    • 5

Restart the computer. The floppy drive may be fixed when the computer starts up.
