As an assistant to the manager, your job is to do what's necessary to help the manager effectively operate affairs at the company. You're also occasionally responsible for monitoring the work of employees who work under you. Strong communication skills are necessary to do this type of work, and you want to be sure that you're communicating to the manager and fellow employees with respect and clarity. It's also important to maintain your composure when your interactions with fellow employees becomes difficult because this will reduce tension on the job.

      Give clear and specific instructions. If you want the advertising director to contribute ideas to your sales campaign for a new product, sit with him and say that you would like him to read the materials you gave him about the new product, then write down 10 ways that you can promote it to potential customers.

      Be stern but respectful in your tone of voice. If you noticed that your manager often lets employees get away with doing less work and as a result you have to bear most of the workload, meet with her to discuss your concerns about this. Politely state that you feel that it is unfair for you to constantly pick up the slack while other employees are not contributing as much as they should.

      Maintain eye contact. If an employee comes to you and requests answers about certain questions a customer has that he can't answer, acknowledge his request by looking at him when he's talking. This lets the employee know that you're paying attention to what his concerns are.
