Whether lathered in cream cheese, dripping with melting butter, or topped with lox, bagels are the foundation of many tasty breakfasts. The circular bread is boiled then baked, creating a chewy and dense texture inside protected by a crispy exterior. With the variety of flavors, from plain to to "everything" there's bound to be a flavor to please everyone.       Separate the salt bagels from sweet bagels (such as cinnamon raisin) or other potently flavored bagels, such as garlic or onion. When stored together, the salt bagels can impart it's saltiness on the other bagels or pick up the flavors of neighboring ones.

      Place the salt bagels in a paper bag. Keep the bag in a dark, dry place, such as a bread box. Storing the salt bagels in a plastic bag can make the bagels get soggy.

      Place the bagel in the refrigerator. While refrigerating salt bagels makes the bagels harder, it is the best way to prevent mold growth if you plan on storing them for five to seven days. Place the paper bag containing the bagels in a plastic bag before putting them in the refrigerator. To revive the bagel after storing it in the fridge, slice it in half, then lightly moisten the inside with a damp paper towel before toasting it.

      Freeze the bagel if you do not plan on eating it within one week of its purchase. Again, put the paper bag of bagels in a plastic bag, then store it in the freezer where they can be kept for up to six months. You may want to moisten the frozen bagel with a paper towel before toasting.
