DIY Watch Band From Fabric

DIY Watch Band From Fabric thumbnail
Cloth watchbands are stylish accessories that you can make at home.

Watches are classic, practical accessories that always seem to be in style. Watchbands made from fabric, as opposed to traditional leather, are highly desired fashion accessories. While these types of watchbands can be purchased from some higher end clothing and jewelry stores, they are usually relatively pricey. Luckily, you can make your own. Your homemade fabric watchband can be created in your choice of colors, and can be custom-sized to fit your wrist.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay your watch face onto your work surface, and measure the width of the slots in which the band will be inserted. Multiply this measurement by two. Then, add 1/2 inch to the product. Write your resulting number down on a sheet of paper for reference.

    • 2

Wrap the measuring tape around your wrist, and take a measurement of the circumference in the area where the watch will be placed. Add 2 1/2 inches to the measurement. Write the resulting number down on a sheet of paper for reference.

    • 3

Lay your fabric onto your work surface. Measure and mark a rectangle shape on the fabric, based on the measurements written down in steps 1 and 2. Cut out the rectangular section of fabric, following your marks.

    • 4

Insert a safety pin into the patterned side of the fabric, through the other side, and back out through the patterned side. Close the safety pin. The safety pin will serve as a guide later on, to help you more easily turn your sewn piece inside out.

    • 5

Fold the rectangular section of fabric in half, lengthwise and patterned sides together. Then, pin together the edges along the long side of the folded fabric, at about 1/4 inch from the edge.

    • 6

Sew a seam along your pinned edges, and remove the pins. Turn the sewn watchband inside out, grasping the safety pin to help you more easily pull the fabric through.

    • 7

Iron the watchband to flatten out the edges. Then, turn the unfinished seams at the end of the band inside themselves, about 1/4 inch. Pin the turned-in edges to help them stay in place. Sew a seam along the pins, and then remove the pins.

    • 8

Insert one end of the watchband through the top of the slot of the watch face. Thread the watchband under the face of the watch, and back out through the slot on the other side.

    • 9

Wrap the watchband around your wrist, and mark with your pencil the areas where the watchband overlaps on your wrist. These areas will be the locations where the pin and hook closure should be attached.

    • 10

Glue the pin and loop closures to the appropriate locations, as marked in step 7, using your fabric glue. Allow the glue to dry according to the recommended drying time found on the directions of your particular glue product.
